Position Summary
The Opportunity Agenda seeks an experienced Social Media Strategist to oversee the organization’s social media content and platforms. This individual will work closely with the Digital Communications Manager to lead social media outreach, and to engage The Opportunity Agenda’s network of social justice leaders, activists, and influencers in shared campaigns and efforts to build narrative and cultural power to overcome white supremacy and create opportunity for all.
The Strategist will work to increase the scale, engagement, and impact of the organization’s brand and programming. Additionally, the Strategist will serve as a deep listener in the digital space and, as a member of the communications team, play a pivotal role in our organization-wide strategy to monitor trends and develop cutting-edge strategies to engage and shape the national discourse. The Social Media Strategist will create content and collaborate with internal and external content creators as well as equip social justice influencers with the resources they need to achieve our goals.
Reporting directly to the Digital Communications Manager, the Social Media Strategist is an independent and collaborative leader. The Social Media Strategist position is a hybrid-based role which requires a combination of remote and periodic in-office work in the New York City headquarters office. Occasional travel is required as the global health situation allows.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate an organization-wide social media strategy – developed in partnership with communications team colleagues – that establishes the organization as an innovator and leader in the social justice narrative field.
- Serve as lead social media strategist for our various campaigns from the initial design stage, through content creation and implementation, to assessment.
- Identify, create, and post content daily across all social channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube.
- Create compelling copy, including translating jargon and technical / expert language used in TOA’s various issue fields for target audience comprehension.
- Manage daily engagement across all social media platforms with the goal of maintaining and expanding TOA’s audience, increasing brand awareness, and strengthening partner relationships.
- Respond to all messages and comments received through social media platforms and the general contact email.
- Collaborate with colleagues to manage the planning, designing, outreach, and execution of digital events (e.g., Twitterchats, Instagram Lives, etc.)
- Assist with the creation of graphics, GIFs / animations, and short-form videos for social media.
- Conceive, develop, and execute influencer campaigns to build awareness, leverage relationships, and sustain momentum.
- Develop social media toolkits for internal organizational use and for external partners.
- Plan, schedule, and oversee TOA’s social media calendar across all social channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube.
- Monitor and track news, disinformation, and conversations on social media to identify opportunities for our current or previous work to inform the public on key issues.
- Stay abreast of digital marketing industry trends, research new tools, platforms, algorithms, disinformation, and channels, and identify opportunities to expand TOA’s reach and increase engagement.
- Manage associated digital tools (e.g., Facebook Business Manager, Linktree, Hootsuite, etc.).
- Assist with developing TOA’s social media policy.
- Generate regular reports that show engagement and growth in online communities and make recommendations to improve performance.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as an organizational spokesperson, including contributing content for TOA’s blog and serving as on-camera talent across social media platforms (e.g., Instagram Reels and TikTok).
- Train staff, board, and various partners on social media communications.
- Travel regionally or nationally, when required, to contribute social media content associated with program, event, or campaign (unless an organizational travel restriction is in place).

Education and Experience
- At least 4 years of experience as a communications professional.
- At least 4 years of experience administering social media platforms and tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or journalism preferred or equivalent experience and skill set.
- Demonstrated experience with the creation of digital artistic content and an artistic eye for design.
- Demonstrated experience working in the social justice sector.
Knowledge, Skills, and abilities
- Excellent writer with strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate in a variety of styles to match organizational and individual brands.
- Experience working with diverse teams or coalitions on collaborative projects.
- Deep Commitment to The Opportunity Agenda’s values and goals.
- A strong working knowledge of social justice issues, organizations, and leaders.
- Experience with editing software (e.g., Adobe Suite, Canva, etc.) a plus.
- Experience in the arts and entertainment field a plus.
- Multilingual skills highly valued.
Organizational Relationships
The incumbent will have daily interaction with all internal departments and will have occasional interaction with stakeholders.

- Covid-19 vaccination required to work in the office
- Ability to travel via airplane and ground transportation approximately quarterly is required (as the global health situation allows).
Work Environment
- Consists of a combination of all the following:
- A variety of remote venues required, including a home-work environment appropriate for phone, video, video meetings, and presentations.
- Business office environment.
Salary Range: $65,000-$80,000
